McTimoney Chiropractic

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic care is appropriate for people of all ages, and works to relieve pain, increase joint mobility and rebalance the body.

The term ‘chiropractic’ comes from the ancient Greek, cheiro, meaning ‘hand’, and praktikos, meaning ‘doing’, so it means ‘done by hand’.

It is a straight-forward method of manually adjusting bones to improve the alignment of the skeleton. Through this process, chiropractic treatment realigns and rebalances the body, and in so doing, improves the efficiency of the nervous system which controls and co-ordinates every function in the body – including the internal organs, hormones and the input received through the five senses

A misalignment of the joints can occur for many reasons. Some are physical – the most common of which are incorrect lifting, car or sporting accidents, falls or poor posture – and others due to chemical or emotional stresses which the body is unable to integrate and adapt to. Misalignments can lead to pain, numbness, pins and needles, or restricted mobility due to stiff or hypomobile, joints.

A chiropractic adjustment is a form of controlled manual mobilisation used to restore motion to a joint which has lost a degree of normal movement. It involves the gentle, specific application of force in order to allow the body to restore joint mobility and normal spinal & nervous system function.

Chiropractic has been proven to help alleviate:

Back, Neck & Shoulder Pain

Pain, Discomfort & Stiffness

Migraines & Headaches

Sports Injuries

Sciatic Pain

Arthritic Pain

How is McTimoney Chiropractic Different?

The McTimoney method of chiropractic was developed by the late John McTimoney over 50 years ago and is taught only at the McTimoney College of Chiropractic in Abingdon, near Oxford.

It is well known for being a precise, whole body approach to chiropractic care using quick, gentle and accurate adjustments ensuring you experience maximum comfort. McTimoney chiropractors strive for optimal health by treating the entire person at every treatment and not just the area that is causing pain. The gentle nature of the McTimoney method makes it especially suitable for people of all ages.

Hi, I’m Patricia Marie!

Patricia Hobbs MChiro MMCA

I graduated in 2014 from McTimoney College of Chiropractic in Abingdon with an Integrated Masters Degree in Chiropractic.

After a successful career as a Chartered Accountant, I become fascinated by the innate intelligence of the body and its ability to heal itself whilst caring for my three children as they grew up.

Initially qualifying as a reflexologist, I soon found my passion for chiropractic work, and was especially drawn to the McTimoney approach. The McTimoney system addresses the whole body at every treatment and respects the connection between the body, mind and spirit – which I believe is fundamental to the healing process.

I am also qualified in Bio-Geometric Integration which is based on an understanding of the innate geometry of the body. I often integrate this technique into my chiropractic treatment to reduce muscle tension before I administer adjustments which I find consistently improves the outcome. This technique is relaxing and often allows muscles that have been in spasm to release quickly and painlessly so restoring movement in the affected joint.

I look forward to meeting you and guiding you through your chiropractic journey to health and well being!

FAQs and What to Expect

The Initial Consultation

At your initial consultation I will take a full medical history and details of your existing symptoms in order to assess your general health and understand the background to your presenting condition. I will then, with your consent, conduct a physical examination which may include neurological and orthopaedic tests, to locate and assess your problem. It is normal for me to require you to undress to your underwear during parts of this examination. A gown is always available and if you have any concerns at all about this aspect of the procedure please discuss them with me. I will discuss the results of my examination with you and propose a treatment plan for you the benefits and any significant risks associated with your condition advice about things you can do to help improve your condition and prevent it’s recurrence

Subject to receiving your consent, I will then administer an appropriate McTimoney treatment which usually addresses the whole body utilising light, dexterous adjustments

My primary concern is to diagnose what is wrong. I will check for signs of any underlying condition and may refer you to your GP if I suspect you require medical intervention or specific medical advice

Immediate Aftercare Tips

During a course of chiropractic care you can expect to feel physical changes as your body realigns. These may include stiffness or tiredness, particularly after your first session. I will give you advice on aftercare and any necessary lifestyle changes to help you get the most out of your treatment

After treatment I would recommend that you rest to allow your body to integrate the adjustments it has received and to avoid activities that might interfere with your recovery. Take it easy for between 24-48 hours and avoid anything strenuous including housework, exercise, carrying heavy bags or lifting

Avoid hot baths for 24 hours, although warm baths and showers are fine

Sporting Activities refrain from sports such as golf, racket or contact sports and exercise classes for 48 hours if possible

Posture be aware of your posture when sitting, standing, driving and sleeping and try to be as well balanced as possible.

Water is vital to help to clear your system

It is important that you talk to me if you feel worried about anything either during or after treatment

What About my Medication?

Anyone taking medication e.g.diabetics, will need to monitor their medication before and after treatment. There may be slight changes in your body’s response

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

In most cases, patients with straightforward problems find that their symptoms have improved within 4-6 treatments. The number and frequency of treatments you will require depends on a number of factors such as:

Age

Extent and duration of injury

GeneraI level of fitness

Stress levels (which can affect muscle tension and
performance of the nervous system)

Posture and lifestyle

At the end of treatment, it is usually beneficial to schedule regular check-ups once or twice a year to maintain optimal levels of movement in your joints and associated good health

How Will I Feel After Treatment?

Every body reacts differently to chiropractic adjustments. The most important thing to remember is that change is a sign that your body is beginning to adapt to the adjustments it has received

Common Reactions

You may experience reactions such as stiffness, aching, tiredness or headache but unless these are severe they are normal responses to the treatment and will soon pass as your body adjusts and realigns

Feeling Better

Many people feel relief from pain, straighter, taller and more balanced as their body becomes better aligned

Feeling Worse

Whilst your body is responding to treatment you may experience changes in pain, feel stiff or sore and previous aches and pains may temporarily return. These effects will disappear as your body settles down after treatment

Tiredness

You may feel tired after treatment and may sleep well following the relaxation of deep tensions in your body

Headaches

The release of waste products from the tissues of the body can cause headaches. Drinking plenty of water will help flush them out

Emotional Changes

These are quite normal and often reflect the release of tension in the muscles

Dizziness

You may feel light-headed or dizzy due to the release of tension, increased blood flow to the brain and different posture

Medication

To gain the most from your treatment, you should follow the advice given and follow the treatment plan we have agreed. I ask you to keep a brief diary of your progress so that you can give me feedback at the next treatment
